photo-output.png

What act categories are being solicited?

Any act under the variety or fringe umbrella. An incomplete list includes:

  • Burlesque, drag, circus arts, pole, flow, clowning, belly dance, puppetry, tap, and magic.

  • Live music, vocals and comedy are welcome, but the act should include an element of fringe.

Does one have to pay to perform?

No. This is not a pay-to-play show.

Will performers be paid?

Yes. There is a $20 guaranteed compensation. Tips are pooled split between acts.

What happens to show profits?

Profits are donated to Burly Cares

Can experienced performers be in the show?

Yes. For experienced performers (> 3 years in the act category) we request you submit only new acts, preferably something experimental or outside of your comfort zone.

How many acts are expected?

Our target is 12 acts per show. Act selection has the goal of achieving diversity of performers as well as diversity of act types.

Can my act include fire?

No. The Newport Theater is currently not accepting fire acts.

Are pole acts welcome?

Yes. The Newport Theater has a pole that performers may use.

Is there rigging for acrobatic acts?

No. The Newport does not have an inhouse rigging setup. However, you are welcome to bring in a portable rigging along with a crew for setup and break down. If you are planning to submit an act that requires rigging, please contact us before submission.

Can my act include nudity?

No. All performers must have their genitals and nipples covered, either by costume or pasties, during the entire performance. This rule applies regardless of gender identity.

Is there a photography/video policy?

You should expect the audience to take photos and/or video recordings, which may be shared online. You are welcome to have a friend record your act. In addition, we hire a professional photographer and videographer to capture all acts and are provided to all performers.

Is there a tech rehearsal?

Given the number of acts, there is not time for each performer to run their entire act just before the show. You should expect about 5 minutes with the a/v tech to do a sound check of your music and discuss staging associated with opening and closing of your act. Call time is typically 5:30 with showtime at 7pm.

Can I be in multiple shows?

Yes. However, if a performer is cast in a show, then they will not be consider for the next two cycles.

What if I need to cancel?

We totally understand that life sometimes gets in the way. If you need to cancel, please contact us as soon as possible, even if you are not sure, so we can start making alternate arrangements. No-shows, without notification, will be removed from consideration for any future shows.

Will I be expected to participate in promotion of the show?

Yes. Once the lineup has been determined, we will be making promotional material highlighting each performer. You will be expected to submit suitable images of yourself for this promotional material. If you are comfortable doing so, we will also ask you to share within your social media network.

Will there be discount tickets for friends and family?

Yes. We will provide performers with a discount code that they can share with invited guests.

Are there policies about expected behavior from performers, producers and audience members?

Yes. Please see the safety policy on the Newport website.
